How Family CAFÉ Supports Families

The Family CAFÉ Project is designed to strengthen the support system for families of students with disabilities from highly mobile backgrounds. At its core, the project increases family engagement in schools and districts by training Family CAFÉ Coaches—parents, caregivers, relatives, foster parents, or community members, who understand the challenges families face and can walk alongside them with guidance. Coaches assist families in navigating the often-complex special education process for their children. They ensure parents and caregivers understand their rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and learn effective ways to communicate with schools and educators.
